Ich bin diese in Google Translate schriftlich. Ich hoffe, es funktioniert besser, vom Englischen ins Deutsche als von Deutsch nach Englisch.
Ich habe versucht, ASC seit 2.1.0 zu verstehen. Vor kurzem habe ich herausgefunden, über Google Translate. Ich habe jetzt in der Lage, Beiträge im Forum und dem Handbuch Webseite (Einsteigerguide) zu lesen.

Using Ubuntu 10.04 alpha, I installed 2.3.79.0 from the source. I opened the first four tutorial campaign files. i.e. tut000.map.de_DE in gedit. I saved them as txt files in another folder. I used the upload a document function to tranlate them. Then copy and paste the English version to a new txt file. I save that file with a different name, i.e. tut000.txt and tut000e.txt. I then used save as... to overwrite the original .map.de_DE file.
I thought this would work but the game still displays the German text when stating the tutorial campaign.
Any ideas? Or should I wait until 2.4.0?
I think I will enjoy this game once I can figure out how things work.

you don't need to translate your texts into German, here are enough people who can speak English quite well.
There have been only very few users writing in the English language forum, which is the reason why the English forum has been neglected for some time...
Regarding the tutorial campaign: we are right now busy translating it into English. If you fetch the latest nightly build, more than half of the maps are already translated. And I expect to finish this weekend. When you fetch the source (either through CVS or tarball), you will find the en_EN files in the data/campaigns/tutorial directory.
If you could give some feedback or even do proofreading, that would be greatly appreciated!
Once a map has been started, you cannot change the language any more. That's probably the reason why your translation attempts were unsuccessful. The message texts are embedded in the map, so you only have to manage a single file for savegames or PBEM games.

If I delete my save files, will that restart the campaign and allow me to see the English files that I created?
I grabbed the main.asctxt last night and took the chance to overwrite the original. It seems to work.

I would be willing to proofread the translations. Being American my English is... lol. But I do use s not z (minimise), colour not color, can use 25Dec instead of 12/25, etc.

You don't need to delete your saves, you should just be aware that all language or translation changes take only effect after you start a new map. So if you load a savegame it will continue with the old text. Since the tutorial doesn't have any long-lasting events, you can just go the base camp (green fields in most levels). That would be already be a new level. And start your topic again, which again is a fresh level start.
The changes to the program code since 2.3.79.0 are right now quite minimal, so updating the main.ascdat is sufficient to get the latest version. When you fetch a new tarball, do a configure && make && make install , which will overwrite the older version. All savegames will still be usable, so you don't lose anything by doing an update.
Changing the language in game options is only necessary if you want to override the default language of the operating system. But I expect that to be already en_US for you.

I forgot about hidden folders and found the saves in the .asc folder. Deleted them but it didn't change. From your post I see why.
The last tarball contained a folder 2.3.79.0 with all the files. I did cd /home/paul/asc-2.3.79.0 and ran the ./configure then make then install. Will the next tarball contain a new folder? If so, will I then have two installs when finished?

On which page are you looking for the downloads? The latest version available is 2.3.72.2:

Yes, I am familiar with the nightly builds page. I am new to Ubuntu. For Windows beta testing, I either uninstall an old build and then install a new build, or extract files from a zip and overwrite older files.
For Battle for Wesnoth on Ubuntu, I have been compiling each build in the folder from the tarball, keeping the previous version in it's folder. If the new version works well, I later uninstall the older build.

This confused me. There is both a new main.ascdat and tarball. I don't think I need both. You also state "which will overwrite the older version". Every version will uncompress into its own folder, becaues the folder name contains the version number.
So compiling a new version does not affect any older one.
But if you do a "make install" , then ASC will be installed in /usr/local (unless you specified a different prefix at configure) and will overwrite the previously installed version.
If you want to have several versions in parallel, there are two options:
- either install them in distinct directories: ./configure --prefix=/home/username/asc-2.3.79.2
- or run them without installing, which requires you to maintain distinct configuration files that contain the path to the data files. You then start with (for example) asc -c ~/ascrc-79.2
The tarball contains everything you need. The seperate main.ascdat that is offered for download is primarily targeted at windows users.

Sorry if I am asking too many questions.
From the 79.2 folder I ran configure then make then make install. (&& didn't work)
I have user/local/share/games/asc with dlg.zip and main.ascdat
To run the game I have to go to the 79.2 folder and find the exe. Then I make a launcher on my desktop. There is no shortcut anywhere that I can find like windows has.
The good new is that I started 79.2 and the tutorial campaign is in English. Thanks for that. I no longer have all that work to use google etc.
I will go through the translations and look for syntax and spelling improvements.

It's usual at Linux that packages compiled from source don't add shortcuts for your Destop / Start Menu / Whatever your WindowManager has.
So you are doing the right thing by locating the executable making a link yourself.
make install will also copy the executable to /usr/local/bin, so you can link from there. That would allow you to delete the source folder and still use ASC.
Alternative, just type asc in a terminal window (I know, the Linux shell is probably not the first thing that windows users will love about Linux
